David Armstong Six
I’ve Been Thinkin’

January 17 - February 28, 2003

Opening reception: January 17, 7pm

Goodwater is very pleased to present a new work by Toronto artist David Armstrong Six.

Known primarily for works that combine active processes with ambitiously scaled structures such as The Soup (2000), in which over 100 litres of thick liquids were cooked together and poured over a transparent drop-ceiling where they coagulated and slowly leaked onto the floor over the course of the exhibition, David Armstrong Six has produced a new video work for his exhibition at Goodwater that will be screened continuously during the day and well into the night.

This is his second video following Track it around (2000) wherein a camera follows the artist's feet through the nighttime streets of downtown Toronto as a mysterious almost alien substance is secreted from his body leaving a trail of goo in his wake. Like Track it around, the 8-minute rant that constitutes I've Been Thinkin' is in essence performative and continues an investigation of what the artist terms 'fluvial thought', although by altogether different means. The video was taken by the artist of himself as he drove through the streets of the greater Toronto area while he recites a song of his own composition. There is a corresponding soundtrack simultaneously recorded by the artist and remixed for this piece which will be pumped onto the street by outdoor speakers. In order for the video projection to be seen during the day, the windows of the gallery will be coated with a see-through mirror film to keep the daylight out but it will also allow the public to see/hear the projection from the street at night.

I've Been Thinkin' is published as an edition of 6. The exhibition runs from Friday, January 17 to February 28, 2003 with a reception taking place on Friday, January, 17 2003 from 7pm onwards.

Since 1996 David Armstrong Six has been included in numerous exhibitions in Toronto, Paris and New York. For the show, Yes, We're Excerpts, at Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York, Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, August 3 2002, "Soup Hole Live Feed, a sculpture in smoked Plexiglas by David Armstrong Six, resembles an L-shaped fragment of high-rise duct work except that corn syrup, Vaseline, glue, cement and sweet-and-sour sauce have been poured down its gullet, creating a messy, still wet appearance - and intimations of disaster or foul play, not to mention Bruce Nauman…".

Goodwater is open Thursday and Friday from 6 to 9pm and on Saturday from noon to 5pm. We are located at 800 Dundas street west, at the rear of the building, facing Palmerston. You can reach us at: 416 703 5222 or info@goodwatergallery.com.
